- Applications of Interactive Media Graphics
- Interactive media is the integration of digital media including the combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images and sound, into a structured digital computerised environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes. The digital environment can include the internet, telecoms and interactive digital television. Items such as smart phones, tablet computers or even your desktop on your computer. one of the biggest platforms that interactivity is used is 'gaming'.
- Picture element and image resolution
- Image resolution refers to the amount of pixels in the image, it is also refers to the height and width as well as the total amount of pixels in the image. The height and width is measured in pixels as well. If your monitor is set to 800x600 pixels and then you open up an image which is 640x480 pixels the image will only fill part of the screen.
- A Picture Element is a little square in a image it is more commonly known as a pixel and the more picture elements inside a image the more clearer the image will become.
- Types of digital graphics used to create digital images
- 2D sprites
- 2d Sprites are 2d bitmaps that are drawn directly to render a target without using lighting or effects. 2d sprites were used in the 80's and 90's.
- 3D isometric sprites
- 3d Sprites are similar to 2d Sprites but gives illusion of the object or character a 3d look. 3d Sprites were first used in the early 90's by Prince of Persia, there is 3 methods to imitate a 2d Sprite into a 3d Sprite,
- concept art e.g. object
- Concept art is a form of illustration that is used to make a visual representation of a design or idea for use in a video game or film.
- textures e.g. face, surface, building
- In the gaming industry, texture artists makes objects, walls, characters, building etc. look either realistic e.g. making a brick wall look rough, or make it cartoony.
- in game interface
- Game interface is a command used in a game e.g. a head ups display, health bar, chatting box, etc.
- printed media e.g box art, anual, poster, CD
- Printed media is where the artists design the front cover of a game and put it on the box, manual, CD etc. They make the front covers of the game look appealing to its target audiences such as a cartoony look would grab the attention of children more while the more realistic look would grab the attention of the older generation more.
- File extensions used in Digital graphics, file compression and optimisation
- BMPbmp, or Bitmap, is a common image file format and is compatible with most computers. It is a raster type format, so that means that it retains it's sharpness when 'blown up'PNGpng, or Portable Network Graphic, is a file type which is not as common as the other file types, as it is not as widely used. You may need to install a programme to open and edit these files, as the programmes pre-installed will not open these files. One common factor about .png files is that they have a transparent background (a grey and white blocked background), so they are more commonly used in the industry for media.GIFgif, or Graphics Interchange Format, is a file format which lets you show a small animation from either a video clip or an animation. gifs are mainly used for online purposes, but they have a limited colour palette so they may not be suitable for some professional companies.
- TIFFtiff, or Tagged Image File Format, is a file extension mainly used by professionals, photographers and graphic artists, but can be opened on most computers.JPG
jpg is probably the most common image file type, as you can open and edit these file types on any computer. .jpg's aren't widely used in the media industry as such, as when you 'blow up' jpg's, you can see the pixels more clearly, so it looks blurred.PSDpsd, or Photoshop Document, is a file type which can only be opened in Adobe Photoshop. This is because the file will contain all the layers of the image, which can only be edited in Photoshop. this type of file format will be more commonly used in the industry due to its relation with Photoshop and its large pixel count.
- Lossy Compression
Lossy compression is when you compress and image, and make the file size smaller, However by doing this, you also loose some of the quality of the original image. Because of this downsize, it is not commonly used, apart from when media is being streamed live, such as a live event or performance.
- Lossless Compression
- Optimising
When optimising images, you will have to set a target output. If a file is too big, it will take longer to load and will take up more space. As well as that, if the file is of too low a quality due to the smaller file size, this won't look good either, so its best to set a target output.
- Image capture, image output and storage of image assets
- Image capture is an application program that lets users upload pictures from their digital cameras or scanners which are either connected directly in the USB port or the network.
- An image output is where the information of the image is coming output of an output device such as the monitor, a CD (it can be an input device as well) and a disk drive.
- STORAGE OF IMAGE ASSETS
- File size is the amounts of bits, bytes and pixels in the file. It could hold pixels, vector data or a mixture of both.
- FILE-NAMING CONVENTION
- File-naming a file means you can locate and find your file easier than leaving it with its original name.
- ASSET MANAGEMENT
- Asset management monitors and maintains anything that has any value to you or the company.
